2012 Breaking Down The Divisions: AFC West

The AFC West started as an offensive division but defense is the letter of the day as of late. By the end of the year, the Chiefs and Broncos were two of the best defenses in the league

What's Really Wrong With Philip Rivers

If you have seen NFL football this season you have noticed that there are several things that are just unexplainable this season. The quarterback position has usually been dominated by the same handful of guys but for some reason, a few of the elite quarterbacks are struggling this season. However, none are struggling more than Philip

Sean Merriman: Lights Out Looking More Like Burnt Out

Outside linebacker Shawne Merriman was once one of the most-feared players in the NFL. On Wednesday Merriman was placed on the injured reserve list because of a calf injury and a “minor-injury designation”. Because he was placed on the injured reserved list Merriman must be released once he’s healthy.

Technically, the Chargers could re-sign Merriman, but he was already a restricted free agent and the team is probably not going to be willing to pay the hefty price tag for a player that has been hurt more than healthy the past few seasons. So I honestly think that it won’t happen, because general manager A.J. Smith hasn’t been a fan of Merriman’s celebrity-leaning lifestyle.

Smith wasn’t really happy that Merriman brought unwanted attention off the field. He was arrested just before the 2009 season after reality television star Tila Tequila accused him of battery and false imprisonment at his suburban San Diego home. No charges were filed, and Merriman and Tequila settled dueling lawsuits.

A man who was once known as “Lights Out” because of his once-ferocious hits, Merriman had 39 1/2 sacks in his first three seasons. He’s had only four in the three seasons since then due to a variety of injuries.

NFL Week 5: They Are What We Thought They Were

The beauty of the NFL is that there is so much parity that on any given Sunday, anyone can be beat. During my time doing internships while coaching every NFL coach to a man basically said “The difference between winning and losing in this league is all in execution. It may sound cliché but the team who makes the most plays and the fewest mistakes will win the most ball games.”

The first four weeks of the NFL season had us believing some teams were something that they weren’t. Some teams were selling us something that we hadn’t seen and a lot of folks including televisions brightest analysts were buying what they had to sell. In order to keep from being jaded this week I decided to cut my twitter time down and my time watching what the “experts” had to say up. That is a reach for me but I probably only spent about 5 hours on twitter the entire week. I wanted to hear what the people who get paid the big bucks had to say about teams and let me tell you first and foremost, the experts don’t know $h!t.

The most popular pick of the week

Why Being Cheap May Cost the Chargers a Chance

I think there is a very slim chance that the Chargers will sign unrestricted free agents Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill. I even doubt that they will play a down for the Chargers at all this year. As unrestricted free agents they can sit 10 games. This would open up negotiations but they would both most likely only earn about $189,000.00 by playing the last six games so I doubt they would want to do that since they would both be ticketed for free agency in 2011 and neither would want to risk injury.

The Chargers have done their share of cost cutting this off season. The let long time running back LaDainian Tomlinson, nose guard Jamal Williams and cornerback Antonio Cromartie go to save some cash. You can arguably say they let a hall of fame running back, the fifth best corner in the league, and the second best nose guard in the league go without any real compensation.
