UNC Basketball has faced several setbacks as expectations are high. Now Harrison Barnes my be forced to really deliver in a spectacular fashion as Kendall Marshall and John Henson have both acquired
One of the perks of living in the Triangle is the ability to see good basketball all of the time. I got my weekend off to an early start this week as the Blue Devils laid the wood to Colorado State.
Today’s post has local flavor. July 1, marks the beginning of the Pro/Am Basketball League sponsored by Jerry Stackhouse. The league should be action packed as always and word on the street is that Austin Rivers is on a roster and we get to witness the top talent in the country put his arsenal on display.
This year there is a new twist as the games will still be played at North Carolina Central University, but because they are now a fully accredited division one university, no high school males will be allowed to participate. The major twist this year is that a women’s league has been added as well.
My first look at a couple of the rosters has me excited to see if many of these athletes are going to show up and participate. With the impending NBA lockout and lack of a summer league, this sanctioned league may be the only avenue for a lot of stars to keep their games in good shape. I saw a roster that had John Wall and Javale McGee on it. Other big names on rosters included Kevin Durant, Raymond Felton, Danny Green, Kyle Singler, Chris Duhon, C.J. Leslie, Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall, and Reggie Bullock.
I am sure you read the title and the first thing you thought was that they gave a bunch of money. Sometimes money isn't the thing that a program needs, especially in the case of the Tar Heels. Sometimes time and wisdom is more essential. When a player has done as much as some of the players in the UNC system has done, giving insight to current players and using the resources that are in front of you makes a lot of sense.
One of the great things about living in the Bull City is the NC Summer Basketball league. Before that ever kicks off, UNC usually has an alumni game where the old school players from yesteryear take on the newcomers and current players. Last June, UNC newcomers Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall and Reggie Bullock took the Smith Center floor alongside Tyler Zeller and John Henson. The event is usually festive and almost always results in a close game that is normally won by the old guard.
The contributions from former players don’t stop there. Days before the Tar Heels squared off against the Duke Blue Devils on February 9, a pair of former Tar Heels, Rasheed Wallace and Jawad Williams, joined Blue Steel and it made for some pretty good competition. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Blue Steel, it’s the last 6 or 7 guys on the UNC bench that no one really knows who they are except for die hard fans who cheer as they enter the occasional blow out victory.
The talk around the basketball world is free agency, and I know you have been waiting for me to chime in but let me tell you that I am not going to be a part of the “Courting the King” movement. I did my piece when I posted about the King joining my New York Knicks and I told you at that point that I was done. I can’t watch ESPN and all the other networks turn LeBron James into Brett Favre.
