Shaka Smart Might Be The Best Young Coach In College Basketball

Have you ever seen a guy get a lot out of marginal talent? Well if you haven't, go watch a VCU game. I am not saying Shaka's team isn't talented, because that is far from the truth. However I am saying that

The Reality Of No NBA Is Finally Setting In

Yesterday ESPN released the last of its top 500 list and twitter went a buzzing. Many people were debating the issue of where their favorite players were and others were contemplating why some younger players were ranked very high without necessarily proving themselves.

The excitement got me primed up for an NBA season, because that’s what lists are supposed to do. However this list only made me feel a bit empty inside. How can I even begin to debate whether or not Carmelo Anthony is a top ten talent in the NBA if there might not even be a season to uphold my argument?

With all of the young talent in the league right now, it’s a shame that the NBA can’t get right. The young men who entered the draft early don’t have a home, nor do they have income that they were expecting. They are sitting in limbo waiting on the opportunity to earn their wealth. Hopefully these young men are back at their institution of learning and obtaining their college degrees. This lockout should help instill the fact that basketball will not be there forever.

N.C. State Finally Finds A Yes Man

After being turned down by the likes of Sean Miller and Shaka Smart along with other coaching candidates, N.C. State University finally found itself a basketball coach. It was reported today that N.C. State has Mark Gottfried as its new head coach. Many of you are probably wondering why that name sounds so familiar. Its because Gottfried has been out of coaching for the last two seasons, working as an ESPN analyst, after resigning from Alabama midway through the 2008-2009 season.

However, the coach has a proven track record as he spent 10 full seasons with the Tide, compiling a 210-132, five NCAA Tournament appearances and one SEC title.  Gottfried also went to the Tournament in two out of three years with the Murray State basketball program.

The Gottfried hiring was announced less than 24 hours after Debbie Yow (NCSU Athletic Director) sent out a somewhat depressing e-mail to Wolfpack Club members, updating them on the coaching search. In Yow's e-mail she talked about how a few possible coaches that didn't work out and began used words like revival and rebuilding, referring to the basketball program.

College Basketball Has More Parity Than I Can Remember

College basketball is such a strange entity. Seriously teams are either hot or not. At the beginning of the season the Duke Blue Devils appeared to be unbeatable. A Kyrie Irving injury and some cold shooting appears and they are as beatable as ever. The UNC Tarheels looked like everyone made a mistake earlier in the year dawning them as one of the nations top teams. They were losing games they should have won and barely winning games they should have won by 30.

The top teams in the nation are fighting for their basketball lives every game. Ohio State barely escaped this weekend. Teams like Pittsburgh who appeared to be invincible have dropped a few games and Syracuse who shocked the world with their start have now dropped a few in a row. The moral of the story is that college basketball has reached that word that everyone hates to hear, but it is so good for the game. That word is parity.

Teams like Villanova, San Diego State, Brigham Young, and Texas have all found their way to the top of the nations leader boards. No one in their right minds would have picked any of these teams to be good this season. I love it though, because it means that every game has the possibility of being a great game.
