2012 Breaking Down The Divisions: AFC EAST

When you think about football over the past few years, the AFC East has dominated the AFC like no other division. Since 2002 the AFC East has had at least one representative in the game every year except for

Why Josh Freeman Will Be Better Than Mark Sanchez and Matt Stafford

If you have paid any attention to football the past four seasons you have noticed that quarterbacks are getting thrown in to the lion’s den a lot quicker than they used too. It’s odd that it’s happening that way since most colleges run non conventional offenses that really don’t dictate or cater to the professional game.

The 2009 NFL draft was no different. The first pick Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions has been a starter for most of his career and has played well when he is healthy. The problem Stafford has is that he is often injured. He seems to go down on the regular and despite having one of the best wide receivers in the game to throw too, his stats are somewhat mediocre when he is playing.

The Jets were also active in 2009 as they chose USC’s Mark Sanchez with the fifth pick in the draft. Sanchez has started more games than any of the quarterbacks, yet he hasn’t piled up the numbers. Sanchez shows flashes of being great but he often leaves you wanting more. He is surrounded with some of the most potent offensive weapons in the game which makes the pressure to be good more visible. He had a Super Bowl MVP wide receiver, a top 10 career running back, and couple of the best offensive linemen in the league on his roster. Not to mention three of his wide receivers have pro bowl experience. Sanchez is winning games, but he is not doing it with his arm. The Jets are doing it with a running game and a solid defense.

What A Franchise Quarterback Like Sam Bradford Can Do For Your Team

At the beginning of the NFL season I made a lot of picks about who would finish where in the division. Most of my picks were centered on good defensive strength, ability to run the ball, and the ability of the quarterback to make plays. A lot of teams didn’t get good ratings because their quarterbacks were unproven, or they were rookies who I had yet to see play an NFL game. Well now that the season is over I have a better idea of who has game and who is a pretender at the quarterback position.

Let me start with Mr. Sam Bradford. I knew the guy could make all of the throws, you saw his pro day, and the man was making even the hardest of throws look easy. I was thinking that there would be a transfer of this ability to the NFL but I have to say I didn’t expect it would come so soon. Especially since Bradford was going to the Rams, a team that hadn’t really done anything significant in the past 4 years.

NFL Week 4: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

The fourth week of the NFL season did not disappoint. The featured match up of the week was however ruined by a Michael Vick injury but for the most part the action in the games was as good as it gets. Some of the teams in the NFL have some serious problems while others are having an identity crisis.

Today on BCSOM we will take a look at the good teams, the bad teams, and the ugly play that has taken place in the NFL up to this point in the season.

The Good:

The New York Jets. The Jets up until this point has been better than I thought they would be. Everyone knew their defense was good but their success has been a direct result of the maturation of Mark Sanchez and the offense. Sanchez has been great so far in the season. He is amongst the league leaders and has spread the ball around wonderfully to his teammates. They can only get better on offense with the addition of Santonio Holmes next week. Also if they can continue to run the ball the way they have, Dallas, Texas may be in their immediate future come February.

The Houston Texans. The Texans have a good team. They are probably the most complete team in their division. Defensively they could improve in their secondary but for the most part they have been as steady as she goes with how they play the game. They have incredible depth on their offense and probably the best defensive line in the game today.

Mark Sanchez: Is He Finally Becoming What We Thought He Would Be

On Sunday Mark Sanchez took a big step forward. Against the Patriots, Sanchez didn’t look like the second year player who was unprepared or second guessing himself. Sanchez was looking like a seasoned veteran with an upside that would leave the avid football coaches, players, and fan drooling while watching him play. Sanchez was making all the throws on Sunday showcasing the rifle connected to the right side of his body. Even in distress he found the proper outlets and for once, the New York Jets allowed him to showcase his ability to throw the ball deep.

Sanchez completed 21 of 30 passes and also had 3 touchdowns for the Jets against a pretty good New England Patriots Defense. What I liked most about how Sanchez approached the game, he didn’t really lock on to one guy. Sanchez was hitting everyone. He was throwing while reading and utilizing play action better than I have ever seen from him since turning pro.

It seems like the Jets were going to the blueprint that was successful in the playoffs last season. On offense they have figured out that teams are going to stack the line of scrimmage on first and second down so that is the best time to pass. Everyone knows that defensive coaches like to run the ball because they like to minimize the number of plays that their defense will be on the field.
