Why Being Cheap May Cost the Chargers a Chance

I think there is a very slim chance that the Chargers will sign unrestricted free agents Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill. I even doubt that they will play a down for the Chargers at all this year. As unrestricted free agents they can sit 10 games. This would open up negotiations but they would both most likely only earn about $189,000.00 by playing the last six games so I doubt they would want to do that since they would both be ticketed for free agency in 2011 and neither would want to risk injury.

The Chargers have done their share of cost cutting this off season. The let long time running back LaDainian Tomlinson, nose guard Jamal Williams and cornerback Antonio Cromartie go to save some cash. You can arguably say they let a hall of fame running back, the fifth best corner in the league, and the second best nose guard in the league go without any real compensation.

The 10 Best College Running Backs in History

Anytime you would like to start a good argument among sports fans, just offer up your list of the Best 10 of anything of all time. I promise at least one person will not agree with your list, and try to top it with theirs. Today I am going to list the best 10 college running backs of all time.

I am a stats guy so I look at yards and touchdowns. But I also look at impact on the game. So here is my own list of college football's best running backs of all time. You may not agree with my list, but just remember I am right and you are wrong!

1- Tony Dorsett was a Heisman winner in 1976 at Pitt. He also was the first college running back to rush for over 1,000 yards in all 4 seasons he played. He had 1,133 rushing attempts for 6,082 yards and 58 touchdowns. Anthony Drew Dorsett was astonishing for a smaller running back at 5-11 and 185 pounds. But he was a speed demon, seldom if ever being run down from behind. After helping Pitt, win a national championship he went on to become a pretty good pro back for the Dallas Cowboys. He is in both the college and pro football hall of fames.

2- Ron Dayne was just a dominating power back for Wisconsin for 4 seasons. When he graduated, Ron "The Great Dayne" owned the NCAA career rushing mark. Ron Dayne is in my opinion the second best college running back ever. He rushed for 6,443 yards and 63 touchdowns. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1999 and is one of 4 players to win the MVP of the Rose Bowl, twice.

A New Birth Is Being Born

"A new birth is being born" were the words LaDainian Tomlinson used to describe the resurrection of his career in New York. However to me it sounds as if LaDainian Tomlinson's already conceding his starting spot on the depth chart to Shonn Greene. Word around training camp is that Tomlinson is looking old and slow in Jet’s mini camp and that his skill set has diminished to the point that he may even see a limited role at the beginning of the season.

LaDainian Tomlinson told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio for a SportsCenter interview that he believes he's competing with Shonn Greene to start.

"I think the best man is going win the starting job," Tomlinson said. Greene is without question the superior player, so he's the favorite in everyone's eyes, including LT's. "I'm tired of being doubted by so many people about what I can do," Tomlinson added. LT did say he'll be able to "get over it" if Greene wins the starting and feature back job.
