Whenever you ask someone how they feel about John Wall the player, you get a mixed bag of emotions. Some thinks that the plays out of control, others like his speed but wish he was a better defender, and
Today’s post has local flavor. July 1, marks the beginning of the Pro/Am Basketball League sponsored by Jerry Stackhouse. The league should be action packed as always and word on the street is that Austin Rivers is on a roster and we get to witness the top talent in the country put his arsenal on display.
This year there is a new twist as the games will still be played at North Carolina Central University, but because they are now a fully accredited division one university, no high school males will be allowed to participate. The major twist this year is that a women’s league has been added as well.
My first look at a couple of the rosters has me excited to see if many of these athletes are going to show up and participate. With the impending NBA lockout and lack of a summer league, this sanctioned league may be the only avenue for a lot of stars to keep their games in good shape. I saw a roster that had John Wall and Javale McGee on it. Other big names on rosters included Kevin Durant, Raymond Felton, Danny Green, Kyle Singler, Chris Duhon, C.J. Leslie, Harrison Barnes, Kendall Marshall, and Reggie Bullock.
Everyone filled out their brackets early in the week when there was very little buzz around Duke guard Kyrie Irving returning. When the word hit the Bull City, most of us expected that if he did come back, he wouldn’t really be that big of a factor considering that Irving had missed so much time. Let’s face it, Irving has played in only a handful of games and although he is one of the premier guards in the nation, missing that much time could not be beneficial to his game.
In most cases when a guy returns at the end of the year, it’s hard to work him into the rotation. Especially when you are one of the top four teams in the nation like Duke. The Devils have won so many games using a system of plays and substitution that benefit what they had left on their roster after all of the injuries. For real basketball fans, you remember when Jameer Nelson returned to the Orlando Magic in the finals a few years ago and it killed the chemistry of the team. The Magic had a system of guards in place but everyone’s timing was interrupted when Nelson returned.
This year Irving has returned to the Blue Devils, but instead of killing the chemistry, he has improved it. In his first game back against the Hampton Pirates, Irving looked as if he hadn’t missed a beat. He was setting the table for his teammates and also scoring 14 points off the Duke bench. Game two against the Michigan Wolverines was more of the same. Defensively he looked stronger than in game one and he managed to score 9 of his 11 points on the free throw line. His play was aggressive and he seemed to fit his role with the team very well.
One of the great things about living in the Bull City is the biggest college basketball game on the planet occurs here twice a year. That’s right, twice a year. The fact that the campuses of the University of Chapel Hill and Duke are only 8 driving minutes apart makes it great if you live in the area.
This year is no different. Technology is probably making the game even better now. The trash talk used to only be face to face, but technology gives the average fan a perspective of some of the legendary former players in the battle. See this battle is intense. There is no secret that there is a love hate relationship with the two schools. Whether it’s on the field, on the court, or in the classroom, these two schools have no love for one another.
Saturday’s battle will bring the end of an era for a couple of Duke players. Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler will play their last game versus UNC unless they meet again in the conference championship game. Both players will go on and be contributing pros, but UNC has youth on it’s side as Harrison Barnes has finally started to look like the pre-season All-American that everyone made him out to be before the season started.
Every time I watch the Duke Blue Devils line up and play basketball, I can’t help but ask, “Would I want any of those guys on my basketball team?” Really no one on that roster looks like they should even be as legit as they are. But looks can be deceiving.
Not many in the country have played better than Nolan Smith. Smith is a go getter a finisher and a prime time player. The bigger the game, the bigger he plays. Kyle Singler is now a household name, and I am not even sure I would have picked him up in a pickup game as he was coming out of high school despite all of the accolades that he had as a high school All American.
Mike Krzyzewski does it every year. Every time the critics step up and say that his team is weak or a big name player like Kyrie Irving goes down, Coack K finds a way to continue winning. His players don’t even talk a lot. They just go about the business of destroying the competition in front of them. You have the guys you kind of like on the roster throughout the years, and then you have the guys who you can’t stand because they play with a cocky confidence that makes you sick to the stomach. A guy who you know if you could get him out on the court in the park you would make him your ……!
