2012 Breaking Down The Divisions: AFC SOUTH

A conference once noted for it's gun slingers has now moved to a league of premier runners. Three of the best runners in the league reside in this conference and make no mistake about it, they are all game changers

One State, Three Teams, And No Head Coaches

The beginning of the season had you thinking that the teams in Florida were ready to make that turn to greatness or at least contention once again. The Jaguars were a surprise last year as they contended

Sometimes You Can Do Things Right But Still Be Wrong, Ask David Garrard

David Garrard has been the quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars for about 6 seasons now and he has in essence been as steady as they go. He finishes in the top half of the league in efficiency and rarely if ever turns the ball over.

Garrard was handed the starting job over another quarterback who was a lot like him. Pittsburgh Steeler backup Byron Leftwich was a lot like Garrard in the fact that he kept the team at the .500 mark and he was always in the top half of the efficiency ratings that teams use to judge the quarterback position.

Garrard should have seen this coming because he got his job when it came down to salary. The Jaguars were on the hook to pay 7 million dollars to Leftwich and they opted to go with Garrard to save a little dough. Well this season it came down to the same thing. The Jaguars saved themselves 9 million dollars this year by cutting Garrard.

David Garrard and Vince Young Can Join Jamarcus Russell At Sizzler

Day one of the NFL Draft had everyone amazed. Many teams addressed their needs while others just landed who they thought was the best pick. The Tennessee Titans were the first to shock the world as they chose Jake Locker. No doubt he is a first round talent but it just assures the public that the Titans wanted Vince Young but they couldn’t take on his baggage any more so they drafted a better version of him, or at least they think so. This cements Kerry Collins as the starter for the beginning of the season until they can get the Jake Locker era underway.

The next big surprise on the big board came as the Jacksonville Jaguars moved up into the spot previously held by the Redskins and chose Blaine Gabbert. It was obvious Gabbert was sweating in the green room as he was waiting to be chosen. But Gabbert going to Jacksonville? Last time I checked David Garrard (Bull City Native) had a 65% completion rating and one of the lowest INT/TD ratio’s in NFL history. Maybe this is a sign that the Jaguars are looking to move in another direction. Again they chose a mobile guy similar to what they already have. This is mind boggling.

The biggest surprise which sent twitter a buzz was the Minnesota Vikings choosing Christian Ponder. Christian “Bleeping” Ponder. No doubt in my mind now that Tarvaris Jackson is the most disrespected man in football. Christian Ponder is Tarvaris Jackson. Only he has a weaker arm and is probably a little slower. I guess this signifies the end of the Brett Favre, Joe Webb, Tarvaris Jackson era in Minnesota. I wish young Ponder good luck as he becomes the face of a franchise that shouldn’t even need a quarterback anyway with all that talent they have in the backfield.

NFL Week 12 In Review: The Playoff Picture Is Starting To Unfold

Now that December is upon us, it's a good time to start tracking the playoff picture. If the playoffs started today, this is what we would have:

AFC

1. New York Jets

2. Baltimore

3. Kansas City

4. Jacksonville

WC: New England, Pittsburgh

NFC

1. Atlanta

2. Chicago

3. Philadelphia

4. St. Louis

WC: New Orleans, N.Y. Giants

Jacksonville and Indianapolis have the same record, but the Jaguars won the first meeting between the teams. It would be foolhardy to count Peyton Manning and the Colts out, but we can at least realistically contemplate Indianapolis not making the post-season for the first time since 2001. It would seem their only route to the playoffs is winning their division — more on that later — as the current AFC wild card teams are at least two games ahead of them.
