2012 Breaking Down The Divisions: AFC NORTH

Make no mistake about it, the AFC North is one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. Last season, the AFC North sent three teams to the playoffs—the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers

2011 AFC NORTH: As Physical As It Gets

Day 3 of breaking down the divisions has led us to the AFC North. When I say AFC North all you should think of is power football. This conference is responsible for earning Super Bowl titles with one word “physicality.” If you aren’t a physical team, you have no business even trying to compete in this division.

Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens are the benchmark of being physical. They are led by their defense and when playing the Ravens expect to have the ball pounded down your throat. The Ravens offense is led by fourth year quarterback Joe Flacco. The running game for the Ravens is solid featuring the dynamic Ray Rice. The wide receiver core is a little aged but got better last season with the recent addition of Anquon Boldin. The offensive line pretty much returns in tact and should be better with another year under their belt.

Defensively the Ravens are immense. They have a ferocious defensive line and the linebackers, led by the great Ray Lewis should be great once again. The secondary will be the biggest question as pro bowl safety Ed Reed continues to get plenty of turnovers for his team.

NFL Week 10: The Mighty Have Fallen

Just a few weeks ago we were ready to crown a few teams because of their remarkable play. Now some of these teams once considered mighty have began to fall from their throne and the usual suspects have started to reclaim what was theirs.

By week 7, the hottest teams in the NFL were the Chiefs, Steelers, Ravens, and the Giants. They all appeared to be headed in the right direction and on a pace to collide in divisional championships. This weekend was unkind to all of these teams as they were beaten rather easily by teams that have begun their upstart.

Every week we listen to talk radio, ESPN analysts, and sports personalities over glamorize NFL franchises. One week Pittsburgh is the greatest team since the game has been invented. The next week the Giants are destined to win the Super Bowl. Then you will hear someone murmur how great the Ravens are and that they will surely be the AFC champions. The reality of the situation is that there is so much parity in the league that you can never really tell who is going to win. It is a matter of structure, will to win, coaching, and a little luck.

Who would have thought that the Jacksonville Jaguars would have a winning record after nine games? Granted luck has played a part in that, but I always say “You have to put yourself in position for luck to even matter.” So hats off to the Jaguars for their success.

Mr. (757) 007: Michael Vick Gun For Hire

Unless something drastic happens when the Philadelphia Eagles play this weekend, you can pretty much expect the Eagles to stay with Kevin Kolb as their starting quarterback. I say this because Kolb is young, he will be fairly cheap for the next few years and he is less controversial.

The real winner in all of this is Michael Vick. Mr. 757, (Newport News Area Code) as he was called in high school, gets to heal entirely as teams across the league sell their soul to get him on their team before the trade deadline hits in the NFL. More than 6 teams in the league could use the services of a proven veteran quarterback right now. Quarterbacks are falling like leaves in the mountains in early October. Some barely made it out of week one while others have crumbled over the past few weeks.

As I pondered over who could use a 007 (hired gun) several teams come into play.

The list:

Is It Time To Give Troy Smith and Colt McCoy A Chance To Start

OK here is the situation, your team is 0 – 5. You were predicted to win the NFC West. You still legitimately have a chance since your division is all over the place without a clear cut leader. You only trail the rest of the division by 3 games. Your owner even goes out of his way on Monday to text Adam Schefter with a message saying “We will win the division.” He is trying to provide a spark. Your team needs a spark. Newsflash: “DAVID CARR IS NOT A SPARK”!

Yeah I know that Mike Singletary has already gone on record saying that he is standing in support of Alex Smith, but maybe now is the time for the 49ers to give Troy Smith his chance at leading the team. One thing about Troy Smith is he’s a winner. He won in high school, he won in college and when given a chance in the preseason he won games then as well. He was a victim of his own success as he got tonsillitis right before the home opener in Baltimore and he never got a chance to lead the team he was so destined to lead.

Well I am a firm believer in being in the right place at the right time and I think this might just be Troy Smith’s destiny. I think the football Gods are yelling at Mike Singletary and telling him “You idiot, I sent you the savior and you still insist on trying to do it your way.” Really, what do they have to lose? The division is lousy so any change will be welcomed and any spark can lead your team to a better record. What’s not to like about Mr. Troy Smith?
