In the NFL we often hear of who is the best player or who is doing well, but what does it mean to be the best at your position? Today at Bull City we will take a look at the players who are arguably the best in the game at their position. Some may be disputable and others are not.
We aren’t talking fantasy points, we are talking production. I get arguments all the time and most people are talking about what people did for their fantasy team. That’s all fine and good but because a man ran 3 touchdowns from the one yard line and has 27 carries for 29 yards doesn’t make them the best at their position.
Before you call me biased let me be the first to state that there isn’t one player on the list from either of my two teams that I follow. I let the numbers and players respect for the players speak for me on this one.

For the past 10 years there haven’t been anything good to cheer about in Buffalo or Detroit. Since the great days of Barry Sanders and Thurmond Thomas, these two teams have been obscure at best. Well all of that has changed in 2011. These two teams have finally found themselves in the mix early in the season and neither looks as if they are going to fade anytime soon.
Both are headed by coaches that I personally know well. The Lions are headed by Jim Schwartz who is a feisty energetic coach, who relates well with the players. Schwartz spent some time coaching at my alma mater North Carolina Central University as a defensive backs coach in 1991 and 1992. He was always fun to be around because of his love for the game and his passion about his alma mater Georgetown University.

There is only one team in the NFL that is suited for Donovan McNabb and nobody is really talking about it. That team is the Detroit Lions. They have a good core of receivers and a fairly young offense. They have a quarterback in Matthew Stafford who cannot stay healthy and a running game that is similar to the guys he had in Philadelphia.
McNabb probably hasn’t even considered the Lions but it makes sense. Even if Stafford beats him out at quarterback, chances are Stafford will be hurt by week 4. McNabb can buy himself some time and prove to the rest of the world that there is still some magic left in that right arm. McNabb is noted as not being the most accurate passer in the world, but he would still be throwing to Calvin “Megatron” Johnson who can catch a BB in the dark.
McNabb can still play but I am not sure at what level. The Lions at least give him a chance to showcase some leadership and some savvy that is well needed on that young but exciting team. I keep hearing rumors of teams that really don’t suit his talents. If he goes to a veteran team, they just get that much older and that doesn’t help them in the long run.

Week 8 of the NFL season is the week before the official midpoint in the season. Yeah I know that there are 16 games in a season but there are 17 weeks in the NFL season because of the bye week. I had more than my share of football so far this season and it has been better than I ever expected.
I know I am guilty sometimes of blogging about the top tiered teams a lot in this league, but I respect what some of the surprise teams are doing so far this season. Although my Cowboys are out of the picture, the surprise teams out there just keep gaining momentum.
You have to love what teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are doing. They aren’t winning any one particular way, they do it with defense one week, offense the next, and some weeks their special teams dominate. They aren’t filling up the statistical columns with useless statistics; they are just filling up the win column with wins. Not to mention young quarterback Josh Freeman is holding up his end of leading the offense as he continues to impress.
Who would have ever thought that the Rams and the Raiders would have .500 records at 4 – 4 this late in the season? The surprises this season keep getting better and better. The silver and black are playing well and the Rams have found a way to win more games this year than they have the past two combined. It doesn't hurt that they appeared to have struck gold with rookie quarterback Sam Bradford.
Let’s not forget about the 5 – 2 Chiefs who are just good enough to find ways to win over the teams they play regardless of the talent level. The Chiefs haven’t changed personnel much this year but they did make two big changes to their offense and defense. They got smart and hired Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weiss. They didn’t fare to well apart but they have won a ton of games when they work together. Some people are born to be together. Weiss has lifted young Matt Cassell into relevance once again.
