The NFL And The Athletic Quarterback: Why Are They Fighting The Future

Everyone keeps talking about how players in college aren’t suited for the NFL game. Players get criticized for not taking snaps under center in college. Quarterbacks run too much in college. Oh he’s a run first and pass second quarterback. The problem is that the college game has evolved into a mobile quarterback’s dream.

Let’s just call it the Michael Vick effect. You can even credit it to Charlie Ward. Before those guys quarterbacks who could run, really couldn’t throw the ball too. They were one dimensional and were destined to play another position on the next level. The quarterback position was reserved for the smart guy on the team who had a big arm and was not fast enough to be the primary ball carrier.

Now college football is all about the triple threat. Very few teams have traditional quarterbacks. The NFL still insists on staying very vanilla and traditional. Teams are reluctant to invest in a quarterback who isn’t a Joe Montana or Brett Favre prototype. It’s too bad for the game that they won’t evolve, because eventually the well is going to run dry. You will have a league full of guys like Jeff George who will be playing far past their prime if the NFL doesn’t begin to adapt.

Is The NFL Combine A Modern Day Meat Market For Athletes

I heard someone call the NFL Combine one of the most troubling events in professional sports. Reminiscent of a cattle exchange, where players are poked, prodded, and put on display. Their argument was that these events are similar to slavery in the early years of American culture where slaves were put on stages and people were invited in to survey what they had to offer and bid on them.

This week, NFL Network has more than 300 NFL draft prospects subjecting themselves to workouts, bizarre intelligence tests, psychological screenings and prodding physical exams at this year's combine are like the players interviewed for the study, many will find the experience invasive at best and at times degrading. Worst of all, perhaps, is that many black athletes will liken it to a slave market.

In essence, the combine is not a slave market. It is a venue for potential NFL players to display their talents and abilities. I am sure it sounds a lot like what we have heard in our history books that slaves went through, but I think that the scouts from the various teams have every right to examine players from head to toe because they will be investing hundreds of thousands and possibly millions of dollars into those players.

Athletes and Cell Phones: Cancel The Text Plan Man

Every week another athlete falls victim to cellular phone fail. It all started with the demise of the great Tiger Woods who left his cell phone out after he decided to go play cards with the fellas last Thanksgiving. Tiger's wife found his phone and like any woman who hears a phone beeping over and over she looked to see what was so important and low and behold she is a couple of hundred million dollars richer.

Then a few months later on twitter, guys like Martellus Bennett and Greg Oden show up a victims of sexting as they took pictures of themselves standing naked in front of a mirror (or so I have been told) and the women that they sent the pictures to forwarded them to their friends so they could see and then the whole world was looking at them naked.

Then a couple of months after that Shaquille O'Neils wife finds some text messages in his phone and she gets upset and files for divorce. Shaq obviously didn't learn or doesn't
