2012 Fantasy Football Draft Guide: Tight Ends

The most overlooked position on most fantasy teams is the tight end. There are weeks when scoring from the tight end position can lead to big points for your team. There will also be weeks when the tight end

The Best Players In The NFL By Position 2010

In the NFL we often hear of who is the best player or who is doing well, but what does it mean to be the best at your position? Today at Bull City we will take a look at the players who are arguably the best in the game at their position. Some may be disputable and others are not.

We aren’t talking fantasy points, we are talking production. I get arguments all the time and most people are talking about what people did for their fantasy team. That’s all fine and good but because a man ran 3 touchdowns from the one yard line and has 27 carries for 29 yards doesn’t make them the best at their position.

Before you call me biased let me be the first to state that there isn’t one player on the list from either of my two teams that I follow. I let the numbers and players respect for the players speak for me on this one.

Take a look at the list:

Offense

OL – Steve Hutchinson – Minnesota Vikings

Hutchinson is the real deal. He makes the running game for the Vikings go. He did the same when he was in Seattle and Sean Alexander was running crazy on the entire league. Hutchinson rarely if ever gets beat and rarely blows an assignment. He is the quintessential offensive lineman in the league.

TE – Antonio Gates – San Diego Chargers

Gates is the new standard of tight ends in the league. Year after year he just produces. He will have to battle to hold on to his best title but he has done very well for a man who didn’t play football in college. He should be looking over his shoulder though since Dallas Clark, Vernon Davis, and a slew of young tight ends are gaining ground.

2010 BCSOM Fantasy Football Draft Guide - Tight Ends

Now that you have gotten your quarterback wide receiver, and running back situation under control, today we are going to discuss the power players. That’s right we are talking tight ends. While you are looking for a tight end there are three things to keep in mind. The first thing you should look for is how many times your wide tight end is targeted per game. Is your tight end one of your quarterback’s favorite targets or will they be blocking the majority of the time. You should also see if your tight end averages at least 8 yards per catch. That is important because you want your tight end to be a person who can get you at least 40 to 50 yards per game and a touchdown from time to time. Below I have compiled a list of the top 15 tight ends to grab in the fantasy draft.

Tight Ends You Want To Get In the First Round

None

Second Round Tight Ends

None

Third Round Tight Ends

1 – Dallas Clark – Indianapolis Colts – No doubt he will be targeted more than most and he is the security blanket for Peyton Manning. Great pick up at the end of the third round but that’s still kind of high.

Fourth Round Tight Ends

2 – Antonio Gates – San Diego Chargers – Gates would normally be first on the board but with a few new receivers and a few new players on the offensive line, I expect Gates may have to help more with pass protection than in years past.

3 – Brent Celek – Philadelphia Eagles – Expect big things from Celek as he will be the goal line threat for the Eagles. The running game will not be that great so Celek should get plenty of goal line opportunities.

4 – Vernon Davis – San Francisco 49ers – Davis is the man for this team. He is a wide receiver trapped in a tight ends body.

Why Being Cheap May Cost the Chargers a Chance

I think there is a very slim chance that the Chargers will sign unrestricted free agents Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill. I even doubt that they will play a down for the Chargers at all this year. As unrestricted free agents they can sit 10 games. This would open up negotiations but they would both most likely only earn about $189,000.00 by playing the last six games so I doubt they would want to do that since they would both be ticketed for free agency in 2011 and neither would want to risk injury.

The Chargers have done their share of cost cutting this off season. The let long time running back LaDainian Tomlinson, nose guard Jamal Williams and cornerback Antonio Cromartie go to save some cash. You can arguably say they let a hall of fame running back, the fifth best corner in the league, and the second best nose guard in the league go without any real compensation.
