The ACC Is Finally Worth Watching Again

It's been a while since the ACC has had any parity. The past few seasons Carolina and Duke have dominated the conference and whenever they weren't playing each other it was blowout city. Now teams are starting to build quality programs and the new head coaches are equipping themselves with four year lettermen to compete with the titans of the ACC.

Florida State, Miami, Va. Tech, and N.C. State all have been drastically improved over the past few years. Now Carolina and Duke have to fight for victories when they can get them versus those once push overs. Sure the ACC isn't what it once was, but the star power has increased and now the teams that no one has talked about in decades are now living up to the high standard that the conference once set.

The key to this success is finally some schools have upper classmen. The notion of kids playing one year and hopping to the NBA has destroyed a lot of these programs and coaches careers. Now coaches are recruiting kids with upside and talent and they stay around long enough to improve that talent before heading off trying to make large amounts of money in the NBA.

There is not doubt that the coaching has gotten better in the ACC. Now you see strategy being implemented and timeouts being taken at the appropriate time. If Carolina and Duke want to maintain their dominance in the league, they better continue to recruit better players because they will no longer be able to win because their coaches are twenty points better than their opponents coaches.

I like this parity and I hope it continues. It will only make the conference stronger. Next year two more great programs, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, will add to the depth and hopefully the ACC can regain its throne as the top conference in basketball. As for now we can just appreciate the fact that the ACC is worth watching again. I know the folks who started the ACC network are happy that is the case.
