David Garrard and Vince Young Can Join Jamarcus Russell At Sizzler

Day one of the NFL Draft had everyone amazed. Many teams addressed their needs while others just landed who they thought was the best pick. The Tennessee Titans were the first to shock the world as they chose Jake Locker. No doubt he is a first round talent but it just assures the public that the Titans wanted Vince Young but they couldn’t take on his baggage any more so they drafted a better version of him, or at least they think so. This cements Kerry Collins as the starter for the beginning of the season until they can get the Jake Locker era underway.

The next big surprise on the big board came as the Jacksonville Jaguars moved up into the spot previously held by the Redskins and chose Blaine Gabbert. It was obvious Gabbert was sweating in the green room as he was waiting to be chosen. But Gabbert going to Jacksonville? Last time I checked David Garrard (Bull City Native) had a 65% completion rating and one of the lowest INT/TD ratio’s in NFL history. Maybe this is a sign that the Jaguars are looking to move in another direction. Again they chose a mobile guy similar to what they already have. This is mind boggling.

The biggest surprise which sent twitter a buzz was the Minnesota Vikings choosing Christian Ponder. Christian “Bleeping” Ponder. No doubt in my mind now that Tarvaris Jackson is the most disrespected man in football. Christian Ponder is Tarvaris Jackson. Only he has a weaker arm and is probably a little slower. I guess this signifies the end of the Brett Favre, Joe Webb, Tarvaris Jackson era in Minnesota. I wish young Ponder good luck as he becomes the face of a franchise that shouldn’t even need a quarterback anyway with all that talent they have in the backfield.

Well it’s plainly obvious that teams are looking to get rid of the athletic quarterback and replace them with the “athletic quarterback”. Maybe its just a case of trying to get younger or maybe it’s a case of being tired of the same old thing. Either way you have to wonder why some teams made the choices they made.

By the way I couldn’t finish this post without mentioning the biggest winner on draft day 1. That’s right the Detroit Lions. That defensive front four just got better beyond belief with the addition of Nick Fairley. Having played for Coach Jim Schwartz I know he is smiling from ear to ear. Can’t blame him though, because who would have thought you would get the best defensive player in the draft at the position you did.

Hey that’s day 1 in a nutshell. If you get time stop by your local Sizzler and give a shout out to Jamarcus, Vince, and David.

I wonder if David Carr, Alex Smith, Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton, Todd Collins, Patrick Ramsey, Cade McNown, Tim Couch, Scott Mitchell, or any of the other NFL bust will be dining at this same Sizzler? Funny, VY and David were much more productive than the players identified. But no criticism of them?

@ Michael.. I would take VY or Garrard over every guy you named.. If you read the article I argued that teams are replacing people who are productive with people just like them talent wise. It has me scratching my head. If you already have something and you like it, why would you not address another need. Seems like wasted picks to me.
