The North Carolina State University rumor mill has exploded about who NC State wants as its next new basketball coach. It made a lot of sense when names started coming up and being shot down. Sean Miller of the Arizona Wildcats was the last name to surface and then he dismissed on all accounts that he was no longer interested.
However, a new coach has entered the rumor mill, ACCSports.com's David Glenn saying VCU's Shaka Smart is a potential candidate, referencing "multiple sources in the college basketball coaching community."
Obviously, Smart has gotten the eye of a lot of troubled and searching schools, given the Rams' Cinderella run this year to the Final 4 and possibly beyond.
The second-year coach has looked nothing like a newcomer to the scene, leading the Rams to a 26-11 record this season after a 27-9 record last year.
NC State would indeed be a step up as far as possible recruiting opportunities, and match ups against the in-state rival North Carolina Tar Heels always gain some buzz for the program. Let’s be real, if he can recruit on a level for VCU then it shouldn’t be too hard to lure some potential talent into the ACC.
I am not 100% sure Smart would even make the move but it sure seems like he is going to be the next hot guy at NCSU. It does make sense but it is unlikely that it will happen. NCSU can only hope that this is the case. He is exactly what NCSU needs, young blood. They need a young energetic guy who is still passionate enough to make things happen, who is passionate enough to get kids to still play hard for him, and who can get folks in the Red and White excited about playing basketball again.
Lets keep it real, NCSU is not Kentucky, Carolina, or Duke, and they haven't been at that level since the David Thompson era. Its not that they won't be good again with the right hire, eventually, but again, State fans must be true to the fact that money may not be the only factor in a prospective coach's decision. It is the total package, and while their facilities and fan base is tops, their reputation in the basketball world right now is not, and that's just the way it is, but a real competitor Head Coach can change that for the better, once again!
