Maybe Some Of The So Called Experts Aren't Really Experts

Who does these football surveys? Last week Sports Illustrated dubbed Terrell Owens (who in my opinion is the number 2 or 3 receiver all time depending upon who you ask) the most overrated player in the NFL. They even had quarterback Tony Romo the 5th or 6th best quarterback in the league today rated as second behind Owens. This survey was supposed to be conducted by the players and I have a hard time believing that is the case.

Well this week Jerry Sullivan stated that Bills linebacker Aaron Maybin who was drafted number 11 overall last year out of Penn State is the worst player in the NFL. Maybin was the 11th pick of the 2009 draft. He's already been moved from defensive end to linebacker, but hasn't found his role in the Bills' new 4-3 scheme. Coaches won't put him on special teams and undrafted rookies are getting more playing time than him.

Sullivan says it's because Maybin is terrible and should be cut. The latter part might be true, but I refuse to believe Maybin is an awful football player. He did something at Penn State, enough to make him the No. 11 pick in the draft. In most cases like this, it's a lack of work ethic that's the real culprit. That's why cutting Maybin would be silly right now. Give him some time to mature, and then reevaluate. The deactivation could be the kick in the pants he needed. Or it could be the beginning of the end of his time with the Bills.

It is interesting how folks just jump out and all of a sudden are ready to label someone because they don’t like them or because they haven’t been as great as they once were. Calling Terrell Owens overrated in preposterous as at age 36 he still commands a double team and if he doesn’t get double teamed he makes teams pay. He is currently 4th in the league in receiving yards and is on a pace far ahead of the numbers he put up in Buffalo. If Owens stays on the current pace he will finish the season with about 85 catches and over 1000 yards receiving. Not bad for an overrated player.

Calling Romo overrated is even more ludicrous as and Dallas Cowboys fans and others will find out even more now as he will be out of the lineup for 6 – 8 weeks. It’s easy to throw stones at players when they are in the lineup but when you get a chance to see what the team looks like without them, you start to appreciate them even more.

The last straw for me was calling Aaron Maybin the worst player in the league. Everyone who watches football knows who that distinction belongs too. Jake “the Goat” Delhomme will be the worst player in the league as long as he plays in the NFL.

The most overrated player in the league in my estimation is Jay Cutler. What has he really done to warrant greatness?

People write what they think will get them attention. Very few people tell it like it really is.
